Trend of JAs' Savings
When compared to other banking institutions, JAs' savings is unique in that the largest portion of their savings is accounted for by savings of individuals. The share of savings and deposits contributed by individual persons accounts for 64% of all savings and deposits outstanding in case of Domestically Licensed Banks and for 80% with Shinkin Banks (credit unions) whereas comparable figure for the JAs is 97%.
The savings and deposits of corporations and public sector entities have high proportion in current savings and deposits while savings and deposits by individual persons tend to be in the form of time deposits. Reflecting this trend, as of the end of FY 2003, the current deposits of JAs was 21,819.6 billion yen and that compared with 54,156.9 billion yen in time deposits. The latter accounted for about 71% of total savings and deposits of JAs.
The total savings and deposits by individual persons with JAs accounted for 5.2% of the aggregate savings and deposits by individual persons with all kinds of banking institutions in the country as of the end of FY 2003, and that represented the same level of share as in the previous year.
