Medical Activities of JA Prefectural Welfare Federations

Of the total of 36 JA prefectural welfare federations, 22 federations have hospitals and are engaged in a wide range of medical activities from emergency medicine to rehabilitation and home visit nursing. These hospitals are equipped with 37,734 beds as of the end of March, 2003, and treated 23,140 thousand outpatients and 11,970 thousand inpatients.

Notable feature of the hospitals of JA prefectural welfare federations is to be found in that 77 of the total of 122 hospitals (or 63.1%) are located in sparsely inhabited areas with less than 50 thousand people, and in this way, are making contribution to providing medical services in rural communities. 36 hospitals (or 29.5%) are the only hospital in the municipality and play a great role in rural and remote communities.

Primary level JAs are engaged in health maintenance activities of members and local residents under a motto of gPrevention supersedes treatment.h In addition to health check activities designed for prevention and early detection of diseases, JAs are active also in wide ranging health promotion programs such as health education and health consultation.

JA prefectural welfare federations run health maintenance activities through 23 rural health check centers around the country, and during 2003 as many as 3,440 thousand persons received medical check-up for life-style based diseases; 400 thousand of them as part of overall check in docks. JAs care to provide itinerant health check services by running equipped vehicles as well as at clinical facilities such as health check centers in an attempt to provide fine-tuned services to the varying needs of members. Medical checks are followed-up by result reporting meetings and post-check health guidance activities.

JAs also give emphasis on health education and conduct health seminars, give guidance on improved dietary lives and instructions for exercise as part of activities to support health promotion for members and local residents.
